After a one, two from Brawn GP at the Italian Grand Prix Brawn have extended their lead over Red Bull.  Brawn GP are now 40.5 points clear of Red Bull and with 80 points available in the next 4 races Red Bull will need a miracle to beat them.  Red Bull have a similar lead over Ferrari.  McLaren will be chasing the 3rd championship position as they aim to finish the season strongly.

Driverschampionship

The drivers championship is looking like a 2 horse race between Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, the two Brawn GP Drivers.  Jenson Button leads Rubens by 14 points with 4 races to go.  As Martin Brundle said Jenson just has to think it is a 4 race championship where he has a 14 point head start.  However a retirement or poor finishes could make things much closer!

Vettel is 26 points behind Button but will face tough competition from team mate Mark Webber.

Ferrari secure sponsorship deal with Santander

September 9th, 2009 BrawnGPNews No comments

It is reported that Ferrari will announce tomorrow that Spanish banking corporation Santander will become a sponsor.  This falls at a time when Spanish driver Fernando Alonso is hotly tipped to join the team.  Luca di Montezemolo said there will be a new partnership annouced tomorrow but stressed that it was the team and not the sponsors who choose the drivers.  He also commented on specualation that the future of Formula One could include 3 car teams.

His press release reads..

Monza, 9 September 2009 – While the teams are getting ready at the box for the Italian GP in a meeting room at the race track the FOTA met under the presidency of Luca di Montezemolo. At the end of the meeting the press release mentioned the comeback of Force India and Williams in the teams’ association, the launch of an initiative for the stakeholders of Formula One (including the media, the sponsors and the organisers) and the intention to start a round table for discussions with the FIA and the commercial rights holder about the future of the sport after 2012.

“We spoke about the future, the possibility of a third car on the track and the possibility to give young drivers the chance to test: this has become the only sport where you can’t train and maybe we’ve exaggerated a bit,” Montezemolo said after the meeting. “As far as Ferrari is concerned, this will be a Grand Prix, which is traditionally not very good to us, but we will give it everything for a good result. I am happy that I’ve chosen an Italian driver, Fisichella, to race here and also Raikkonen is in great form. I’ll be back here tomorrow to talk about a new partnership, but that doesn’t mean anything in terms of choices for the near future: I want to say it again, that the drivers are chosen by Ferrari and not by the sponsors.”
