Michael Schumacher to return to Formula One

July 29th, 2009 BrawnGPNews No comments

In an announcement today Formula One 7 times World Champion Michael Schumacher has confirmed he will stand in for Felipe Massa in the coming races.  Massa was hospitalised during the Hungarian Grand Prix after a spring from Rubens Barrichello’s car came unattached and struck Massa’s Helmet.

Michael Schumacher has said that while “the chapter Formula 1 has been closed for me since long and completely, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation.”

His full press release reads…

“The most important thing first: thanks God, all news concerning Felipe are positive. I wish him all the best again.

I was meeting this afternoon with Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe. Though it is true that the chapter Formula 1 has been closed for me since long and completely, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation. But as the competitor I am I also very much look forward to facing this challenge.”

The last time Michael Schumacher drove the current Ferrari was in April 2008 (source Formula1.com)

Future of Formula One in doubt

May 13th, 2009 BrawnGPNews 2 comments

We recently gave details of the 2010 regulations for the Formula One World Championship here.  The Formula one teams have until the 29th May to sign up for the 2010 season.  Several teams have openly criticised the new regulations and said in their current form they will not compete.

Ferrari

Ferrari have the longest history in Formula one and are often the centre of contention with many conspiracies believing the FIA secretly favour them in rulings.  However after a Ferrari board meeting they released a statement to the effect that they would not compete in 2010 with the proposed regulations.

for the first time ever in Formula 1, the 2010 season will see the introduction of two different sets of regulations based on arbitrary technical rules and economic parameters.

The Board considers that if this is the regulatory framework for Formula 1 in the future, then the reasons underlying Ferrari’s uninterrupted participation in the World Championship over the last 60 years – the only constructor to have taken part ever since its inception in 1950 – would come to a close.

Renault

Renault have also stated they would not compete under the regulations, saying that they are of the firm view that all teams should have the same rules whereas the proposed regulations, give different technical regs depending whether the team limit themselves to the budget cap.

The decision of the Federation International de l’Automobile (FIA) to introduce two sets of Formula 1 technical regulations for the 2010 Formula One season has caused the Renault Group to reconsider its entry in next year’s FIA Formula One World Championship.

There is frustration that FOTA’s constructive proposals, including major cost saving measures to be adopted progressively between 2009 and 2012, which were carefully constructed by FOTA members, have been completely ignored without any form of consultation by the FIA with the teams.

Red Bull

Dietrich Mateschitz the owner of Red Bull stated If the proposed rules for 2010 remain unchanged, we will not enter next year’s championship

If the proposed rules for 2010 remain unchanged, we will not enter next year’s championship

Toyota

Toyota’s president John Howett stated

Under the rules as they are published, we cannot submit an entry,” he told AUTOSPORT in an exclusive interview. “There are concerns about the governance process within the sport, that there are clearly prescribed areas of discussion within the sporting and technical rules and we don’t feel they are being complied with.

“From Toyota’s perspective there are a number of concerns that really need clarifications before we commit to the future. We want to be here. We believe we have been a good corporate citizen within the F1 environment, but now we must reflect long and hard on what we do in the future.”

When asked to clarify what the chances were of Toyota lodging an entry by the end of this month, Howett said: “I would say it is very likely we won’t enter unless something changes significantly.”

What happens next?

Some columnists have just written this off as grandstanding by the teams but others disagree as it is not natural for the large manufacturer teams such as Ferrari to be limited by cost as they want to show the full extent of their technical resources so if they can’t put the full power and funding of Ferrari behind Formula one then would they stay in?

Either in the coming months we will see the FIA step back on the rules and meet the teams half way or 2010 will be a very different year.

Is it all bad?

While the budget cap is a radical step it is not all bad.  The independent teams such as Williams who are not run by a car manufacturer have come out in support of these budgets.  Also cost cuts may attract several new teams to the sport.  Dave Richards who previously ran BAR is considering entering a team into the 2010 season, also Lola are considering re entry.

Only time will tell what will happen but what do you think?  Are cost caps a good idea, do you want to see more independant teams?  Let us know!

It Is What It Is: David Coulthard The Autobiography

It Is What It Is: David Coulthard The Autobiography

From his quiet beginnings in rural Scotland to his multi-millionaire lifestyle in Monte Carlo, where he owns one of the most luxurious hotels in the principality, David Coulthard’s life story is an extraordinary one. He got his breakthrough into Formula One in the tragic circumstances of Ayrton Senna’s death in 1994, and quickly established himself as one of the best drivers on the circuit. From 1996-2004, he drove for McLaren, one of the leading teams throughout the entire period, before moving to Red Bull for 2005-07. Taking the reader from his early days when he first became hooked on racing karts at the age of eleven to the high-speed world of Formula One, Coulthard has written one of the most honest and powerful sports autobiographies of recent years. He talks frankly about his ups and downs at McLaren and also about the reputation he gained for his playboy lifestyle. Throughout it all he seeks to answer the questions about himself that anyone might ask, and so to reveal what it is that really drives him on. His struggle to understand himself makes for a remarkable memoir. Click here for more information and to buy David Coulthard It is what it is
